The Devil's Hole is a karst spring in Osterode am Harz in Lower Saxony.

Description

The Devil's Hole is located southeast of Augustental in high forest on Karstwanderweg. It is a circular versumpfter sinkhole filled with bluish green shimmering water. The effluent stream feeds the west in the devil baths and then flows over the Apenke the Söse to. After heavy rain events occur more sources from the shore, which give the karst water in Devil's Hole, a brownish color. The Devil's Hole is within the nature reserve devil bathrooms.

Popular beliefs about the Devil's Hole

Previously, there were something threatening in the Devil's Hole. The origin of the shimmering blue water from the sinister depths people could not explain. It was said of wisps in human size, the nocturnal wanderer lured over the bent tree in the Devil's Hole. Others believed in the water lurks the devil in the shape of a giant one-eyed fish with a needle- sharp teeth.
