This album debuted as Jay -Z's previous albums, again number one, with over 545,000 units sold in the first week of release. To date, units were sold of the album in the United States over two million. The album was criticized for the pop-oriented sound.

The first CD The Gift has more upbeat and contains more party songs, including the successful single '03 Bonnie & Clyde Excuse Me Miss as well. The Curse contains more harder rap and hip -hop songs.
