The Knack

The Knack was an American rock band. Their music is heavily influenced by rock ' n ' roll and the great bands of the 1960s; particular influences of the Beatles, the Kinks or the Byrds are recognizable. The Knack was among the groups whose music brought a departure from the hitherto dominant disco music. Their sound has been described as Power Pop. The musical heads of the group were Doug Fieger and Berton Averre who composed most of the songs.

Band History

Founded as the group in May 1978 by Doug Fieger ( born August 20, 1952 in Detroit, Michigan, † 14 February 2010), Berton Averre ( born December 13, 1953 in Van Nuys, California), Prescott Niles ( born May 2, 1954 in New York, NY) and Bruce Gary ( born April 7, 1951 in Burbank, California, † August 22, 2006 in Tarzana, California).

Your first merits, the band earned during appearances at clubs in Los Angeles. In 1979, she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records. Their first album - titled Get The Knack - was produced by Mike Chapman, who had already made a name for himself as a hit producer of groups like The Sweet and Blondie. The single from the My Sharona was a worldwide hit.

It was followed by two more albums, which, however, were no longer able to follow the success of the debut. Following the release of the third album Round Trip in 1981, the group split.

1986/87, the band was together again for a few appearances, but this reunion was not to last. Furthermore, no new studio material was recorded.

1991 saw the band another shot - but with a changed line as Billy Ward now took over the drums. The result was the album Serious Fun produced by Don Was.

There was a pause again and it took until 1998 before the next album Zoom appeared, this time with Terry Bozzio on drums. Followed in 2001 as far last studio recording the CD Normal as the Next Guy. 2002, the previous albums, the group have been re-released in remastered versions.

Drummer Bruce Gary died in 2006 in a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Singer Doug Fieger died on 14 February 2010 after many years of struggle against lung cancer. Fieger's last recording was released on Bruce Kulicks 2010 to published album BK3, on the Fieger the title Dirty Girl sings.
