Action
The 13 -year-old Hedy (original Sharon ) spends her vacation at summer camp "Camp Inch". Here she meets the brunette Susi, who sees her confusingly similar. The two girls are utterly hostile and play each other mischievous pranks - as punishment they must spend the rest of their holiday together in a camp cabin. Here they discover that they are twins who were separated from their divorced parents: Hedy was raised by her mother in Boston and Susi with her father in Monterey, California. Indignant at the family disfunction plan Hedy and Susi to swap after the holidays, the places with the intention of their parents to merge at a later re-exchange again. After meticulous preparations so as Hedy Susi travels to Boston, and Hedy as Susi to California.
It comes to turbulent situations when the girls immerse themselves in their new life - particularly tricky it is for Hedy in California when she learns that her father Mitch is planning to marry the young woman Vicky - which, however, tend to Mitch's bank account than at its is interested in love.
Meanwhile, Susi airs in Boston the secret of her identity. Her mother Maggie brings them to California, where she first met her ex-husband again after many years. Production
In this film, which was developed by the Disney Studios Yellow screen method was used for the first time trick shots, which is comparable in principle with the blue screen technique, which was not yet fully developed at that time. Even the then usual technique to play together two image information using rear projection was superior to this process significantly, thus the higher cost of development and deployment were justified. With the rapid progress in the development of alternative techniques which until the 1970s unrivaled method lost its importance.

25 years after its premiere, The Parent Trap was continued with a series of television films:
1986 The Parent Trap II ( German title: Nikki and Mary - The 5 -minute marriage ), 1989 Parent Trap III ( German Title One Parent Trap, not to be confused with the remake ) and also 1989 Parent Trap IV: Hawaiian Honeymoon ( German title: honeymoon in Hawaii). In all sequels Hayley Mills was again as Sharon and Susan in front of the camera. In the German versions of the TV films the twins kept otherwise than in the dubbed version of The Parent Trap announce their American names Sharon and Susan. The last two films in the series deal with Susan's relationship with her new husband ( Barry Bostwick ), the father of triplets is. Content is no longer connected to the template by Erich Kästner.
