The Pirate Queen is a musical by Alain Boublil, Claude- Michel Schonberg and Richard Maltby Jr.. It is based on the novel " Grania -She King of the Irish Sea" by Morgan Llewelyn.

Performances

The Broadway premiere took place on 5 April 2007, directed by Frank Galati held at New York's Hilton Theatre. Previously there had been in the U.S. several try- outs, including in Chicago. Due mainly weak press reviews and poor viewing figures fell for the 16 million dollar production on 17 June 2007 after only 32 previews and 85 regular performances the final curtain.

Action

The Pirate Queen is based on a historical event and takes place in Ireland and England in the late 16th century. Ireland's Grace O'Malley opposes Queen Elizabeth I of England, conquered Ireland with their troops. At that time Ireland was divided among different clans, as the story succeeds Grace to unite the clans and fight with her as a leader against the invaders.

Together with their supporters, they goes to sea and leads to even more attacks against the British fleet. Amid the turmoil Grace in love with a sailor, but for political reasons they should marry the leader of another clan. However, this is only his personal benefit and disappointed all, put the trust in him. Ultimately, Grace is arrested and imprisoned. When it comes to direct confrontation with the Queen of England, recognizes this, that you face a strong-willed and independent personality like her. Under the condition that Ireland remain loyal and obedient to the English crown behaves towards Elizabeth dismisses the prisoners to freedom.
