Theodor Leschetizky

Teodor Leszetycki ( born June 22, 1830 in Łańcut, Galicia, Empire Austria, † November 14, 1915 in Dresden, better known by his chosen German form of the name Theodor Leschetizky ) was a Polish pianist, composer and music educator.

Life

1841 Theodor debuted as a pianist with a piano concerto by Carl Czerny in Lviv. At the age of twelve years Leschetizky went to Vienna and studied piano with Carl Czerny and composition with Simon Sechter and was already at the age of 14 years, piano teacher and pianist.

In 1854, he went to Saint Petersburg, where he in 1862, along with Anton Rubinstein founded the local conservatory. Leschetitzky applies in addition to Nikolai Rubinstein as a progenitor of the so-called Russian piano school.

In St. Petersburg he taught until 1878, and was concertmaster at the court of the Grand Duchess Helena, gave numerous concerts and was also active as a conductor. In 1878 he went to Vienna again. Numerous well-known pianists were among his pupils, as Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Artur Schnabel, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Elly Ney, Mieczysław Horszowski, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Paul Wittgenstein, Ignaz Friedman, Anna Hirzel - Langenhan, Antonina Szukiewicz, Richard Buhlig, Dmitri Klimov and Mark Hambourg. Leschetizky was one of the most important and influential piano teachers of his time. Leopold Godowsky dedicated to him some of his studies of the Etudes ( Chopin).

In 1878 he moved back to Vienna and was now married to the pianist Anna Jessipowa, who was his student. After the concert singer Fried Castle she was already his second wife. In 1892 he was divorced and was married from 1894 to 1908 with Donimirska Benislawska and from 1908 to Marie Gabriele Rozborska.

On 18 February 1906 he took twelve piano pieces for the Welte-Mignon reproducing piano at the Leipzig recording studio of Welte, seven of his own works. There is also an Edison cylinder from around 1900, where he talks about " No life without art."

He was buried in a grave of honor in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 0, number 1, number 94).

In 1932 in Vienna Waehring (18th district) was named the Leschetitzkygasse after him.

A Leschetizky Club with an extensive archive was founded in Bad Ischl by Leschetizky great-granddaughter Margaret Tautschnig and Belgian pianist Peter Ritzen 1991. In the district of Maple there is a monument.
