Theodor von Heldreich

Theodor Heinrich Hermann von Heldreich ( March 3, 1822 in Dresden, † September 7, 1902 in Athens ) was a German botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Heldr. ".

Life

After studying philosophy in Freiburg Heldreich turned from 1837 to 1842 of botany in Montpellier and Geneva. In 1843 he settled in Athens, where he made numerous excursions. From 1849 to 1851 he lived in England and was herbarium curator in Paris.

Heldreich was since 1851 Director of the Botanical Garden in Athens. He was also from 1858 to 1883 curator of the Natural History Museum of the University of Athens. In 1892 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

The plant genus Heldreichia Boiss. from the family of cruciferous plants ( Brassicaceae) has been named in his honor.
