Thio-

Thio (from Greek theion, sulfur ') is a prefix, which is used in chemical compounds in which oxygen is replaced by sulfur. This is very often possible because sulfur a very similar electron configuration as has oxygen, evident from the fact that he in the periodic table is in the same main group such as oxygen.

  • Cyanates, thiocyanates and isocyanates → → isothiocyanates

  • → alcohols, thiols or mercaptans
  • Ether thioether →
  • Carbonyl thiocarbonyl →
  • Aldehyde → thioaldehyde
  • Ketone → thioketon
