This Mortal Coil

This Mortal Coil (TMC ) was a music project of the British independent record label 4AD and its co-founder Ivo Watts - Russell.

The This Mortal Coil project consisted of a collaboration between various musicians, who all stood in a loose association with the label 4AD: For example, Colourbox, Dead Can Dance, The Wolfgang Press or the Cocteau Twins. This Mortal Coil published in the period 1983-1991, only three albums: " It'll End in Tears ", " Filigree & Shadow" and " Blood". Each of the albums consisted largely of atmospheric- fragile interpretations of 1970s musicians such as Alex Chilton, Roy Harper or Tim Buckley and his own compositions. One of the most famous titles, an interpretation of Tim Buckley - piece " Song to the Siren ," is on the album " It'll End in Tears". This as the starting point of the project to be designated song was recorded with Elizabeth Fraser from the Scottish group Cocteau Twins, who were also on 4AD under contract. The song, which initially was on a B- side of the eingesungenen by Elisabeth Fraser as Medley Modern English song " Sixteen Days " and " Gathering Dust" and finally was placed on the UK indie charts for 101 weeks, and was a in the movies. Lost Highway by David Lynch ( 1997), the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and the Lovely Bones Peter Jackson (2010 ) was used as background music. He also can be heard in a perfume advertisement for the perfume by Cacharel Noa.

The name " This Mortal Coil" (German literally means " this mortal coil ", mutatis mutandis: " confusion of life " ) is derived from a quote from William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Watts Rusell founded in 1990 a follow-up project, which he called " The Hope Blister " and in 1998 the album " ... smile 's OK" brought out. The TMC record cover, as nearly all 4AD productions of the British graphic designer Vaughan Oliver and his compatriot, the photographer Nigel Grierson designed.
