Thomas (name)

Thomas is a male first name, however it is also used as a female first name in different variants.

Origin and Meaning of the Name

The name is derived from the Aramaic te'oma ( תאומא ), meaning " twin". He is also in John's Gospel interpreted (Jn 11,16 EU). The name is pre-Christian not used as a proper name. Therefore, the Greek Thomas ( Θωμάς ) is probably a transliteration of the Aramaic word.

Dissemination

The Christian first name goes back to the Apostle Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. It is widely used since the Middle Ages. The term is still used pejoratively " doubting Thomas " also goes back to the Apostles, because according to this New Testament tradition of the resurrection of Jesus at first doubted, until he was allowed to see the wounds of the Risen Christ (Jn 20.19 to 29 EU).

The popularity of the given name in Germany developed from the forties steadily upward. From the late fifties through the sixties through the entire name was almost continuously at number one on the statistics of the most popular first name. At least since the mid-eighties, however, its frequency is decreased significantly.
