Thomas T. Flagler

Thomas Thorn Flagler ( born October 12, 1811 in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York, † September 6th 1897 in Lockport, New York ) was an American politician. From 1853 to 1857 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Flagler attended the common schools and then completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade. Until 1842 he worked in the newspaper industry. Here he first gave in Oxford in Chenango County and then from 1836 in Lockport each publish a newspaper. After 1842 he worked in the Hardware industry. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Whig Party launched a political career. In the years 1842 and 1843 he sat as an MP in the New York State Assembly; 1849 to 1852 he was treasurer in Niagara County.

In the congressional elections of 1852 Flagler in 31 electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Frederick S. Martin on March 4, 1853. After a re-election as a candidate of the short-lived opposition party he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1857 two legislative sessions. These were shaped by the events leading up to the Civil War.

1856 renounced Thomas Flagler on another Congress candidate. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he took his previous activities on again. In 1860 he was again in the House of Representatives of his State; 1867-1868 he was a member of a Constitutional Convention of New York. In 1859 he was co-founder of Holly Manufacturing Co., which manufactured fire hydrants. Flagler was president of this and eight other companies that were also active in this field. He died on 6 September 1897 in Lockwood.
