Tías, Las Palmas

Tias is one of the seven churches of the Canary Island of Lanzarote and is located in the southeastern part of the island. The eponymous main town has 5,319 inhabitants. However, the largest town (called by the locals also La Tiñosa ) Puerto del Carmen. Tias is on the island of Lanzarote, the municipality with the highest proportion of foreigners, it is 38.5 percent (as of November 2006).

The city's name comes from the Tias great-aunts of the former governor of Gran Canaria, Don Alonso Fajardo. They were called Doña Francisca and Doña Hernan Fajardo. First was called the City Tias de Fajardo ( the aunts of Fajardo ), was later briefly shows the name Tias as the capital town.

In the municipality of Tias associated valley La Vega de Tegoyo Mr. homes are located in the old colonial style, such as the Casa Pereyra.

Arts and Literature

In the El Taller de Arte ( Art Workshop ) regular solo exhibitions of contemporary art, group and themed exhibitions, performances, readings and concerts by international and local artists have been conducted since 2002. The El Taller de Arte " is located near the village of Conil. Near the Montana Ratjada, Camino de Barranco Tegoyo are the project and exhibition spaces.

The Portuguese poet José Saramago was in the 1990s in protest into exile in Tias, after his novel The Gospel According to Jesus Christ in 1991 was rejected by the conservative Portuguese Government. He lived and worked here until his death on June 18, 2010.
