Tichit

Tichitt (Arabic تيشيت, DMG Tīšīt ) also Tichit, Tichite; is an ancient oasis town in the region Tagant at the foot of Tagant Plateau in eastern Mauritania.

The village is located about 250 kilometers east of Tidjikdja. It was founded about 1150, in the 17th century was the commercial center of Tagant and is known for its traditional stone houses. The main source of income is the date cultivation, there is also a small museum.

The city has been declared since 1996 along with three other Mauritanian caravan cities, Ouadane, Chinguetti and Oualata Ksour due to their site for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
