Giant Quoll ( Dasyurus maculatus )

The giant quoll or spot tail Quoll ( Dasyurus maculatus ) is a species of the family of Dasyuridae.

Features

With a body length 35-76 cm and a weight of up to 4 kg in females and 7 kg in males it is the largest of the Australian Quoll. The top is red-brown or brown with different sized white spots, the underside is paler colored. The species differs from other species of the genus by the spotted dick.

Dissemination

The giant Quoll occurs in two subspecies, the smaller Dmgracilis limited to a small area in northern Queensland on the Cape York Peninsula, the nominate Dmmaculatus is distributed from southern Queensland to Victoria and Tasmania.

Habitat

Within the distribution area of different habitats are used as living space, from rainforests to open heath and bush landscapes.

Way of life

Although the giant Quoll is mainly nocturnal, it can also be observed during the day in times of increased nutritional requirements. It feeds on mammals up to the size of small wallabies, reptiles and insects. A large share of the food spectrum have torn from dingoes and feral dogs carcasses.
