Tillandsioideae

Vriesea splendens hybrids A known houseplant.

The Tillandsioideae are a subfamily of the plant family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ).

Key Features

There are perennial herbaceous plants. They grow mostly epiphytic or lithophytic.

Main features of the subfamily are their:

  • Upper permanent or semi- permanent under ovary
  • Fruits: Fruits are capsule
  • Seeds: they have flying hair (similar to dandelion).
  • Your leaf margins are always smooth, while in the other sub- families, the leaves are often reinforced.

System

The systematics of the subfamily Tillandsioideae is subject because of the demarcation problem of genera and recent phylogenetic studies constant changes.

To subfamily Tillandsioideae include (recently ) nine genera with about 1100 species. The genus Tillandsia was divided into: Tillandsia ( Tillandsia ), Racinaea. The genus Vriesea was divided into: Vriesea Alcantarea and Werauhia.

The subfamily is divided into four tribes:

  • Tribus Catopsideae: The ovary is upper constant. With only one genus: Catopsis Griseb. With about 21 species.
  • Tribus Glomeropitcairnieae: The ovary is half inferior. With only one genus: Glomeropitcairnia Mez: With only two species.
  • Tribus Tillandsieae: The ovary is half inferior. With five genera: Guzmania Ruiz & Pav: With approximately 170 species.
  • Mezobromelia L.B.Sm.: With about nine species.
  • Racinaea MASpencer & LBSm. With about 62 species.
  • Tillandsia L.: With over 550 species.
  • Tribus Vrieseeae: The ovary is half inferior. With three genera: Alcantarea ( E.Morren ex Mez ) Harms: With about 18 species.
  • Vriesea Lindl. With nearly 200 species.
  • Werauhia J.R.Grant: With about 70 species.
