Tim Johnson (U.S. Senator)

Timothy Peter Johnson ( born December 28, 1946 in Canton, South Dakota ) is an American politician (Democrat ). Since 1997 he has been a United States Senator from South Dakota. He will not stand for re-election in 2014 and therefore resign from the post in January 2015.

Johnson studied for his schooling at the University of South Dakota in 1969 and received the Bachelor's and Master's degree in 1970. In 1975 he was awarded the Juris Doctor in Law at the University of South Dakota. After his studies he worked as a lawyer. In 1979 he was a deputy in the House of Representatives from South Dakota and moved in 1983 to the State Senate.

In 1986 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States, from which he retired on January 3, 1997. On this day he moved to his election victory over Larry Pressler in the Senate of the United States, where he continues listening. Most recently, he was confirmed in 2008 with 62.5 percent of the vote against Joel Dykstra in office. Since January 3, 2011, he performs as a successor to Chris Dodd chairs the Committee on Banking and Urban Affairs.

Johnson is married to the social worker Barbara Johnson and the couple have three children.
