Timna ( altsüdarabisch Tmn ʿ Arab تمنع, DMG Timna ) was the capital of the empire Qataban in Yemen and is located 180 km southeast of Sanaa, 70 km south of Ma'rib and 400 km north of Aden. The route from Ma'rib to Timnah is part of the ancient caravan route along the Incense Route.

History

Timna was born in the first half of the 1st millennium BC and was the political center of the empire Qataban, which is on record since the end of the 8th century BC. After the conquest of Hadramaut Qatabans by around 150 AD Timna was abandoned. While the rest state of Qataban to Ghat Ghayl 15 km south of Timna could still claim some decades, but even this was finally conquered by the Hadramaut.

Location and economic

Timna was located at the outlet of Wadi Bayhan, whose territory also formed the agricultural hinterland of the city. However, economic basis was the frankincense trade, led by the city. Characters for the prosperous and commercial complex is the resulting regime of King Shahr Hilal.

Research

In the 1950s, the U.S. archaeologist Wendell Phillips began with the excavation of the buried village, and laid thereby the southern city gate with its gigantic pillars of the temple quatabanischen free. Individual inscriptions and other parts of homes were able to be secured photographically. Today, much of the discoveries sanded again, since hardly any funds are provided for tracking receipt.
