Timothy Manning

Timothy Cardinal Manning (* November 15, 1909 in Ballingeary, Ireland, † June 23, 1989 in Los Angeles, USA) was Archbishop of Los Angeles.

Life

Timothy Manning studied in Menlo Park, California and Rome, the subjects of Catholic theology and philosophy and was ordained in Los Angeles on June 16, 1934 priests. After further studies, he worked in the years from 1936 to 1938 as a parish priest in Los Angeles. From 1938 to 1946 he was personal secretary to the Archbishop of Los Angeles. Then he looked again in the church ministry.

On August 3, 1946, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Titular Bishop of Lesvi and Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. He received his episcopal consecration of Bishop in Los Angeles, Joseph Thomas McGucken, on 15 October of the same year. Co-consecrators were the Superior General of the Maryknoll missionaries, Bishop James Edward Walsh MM, and Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Arthur Connolly of San Francisco. Timothy Manning was appointed Chancellor of the Archdiocese, from 1955, he led also as Vicar General of the administration of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

On October 16, 1967, he was called by Pope Paul VI. appointed the first bishop of Fresno, on May 26, 1969 appointed him Paul VI. Titular Archbishop of Capreae and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, whose leadership Manning took over with the resignation of James Francis Aloysius Cardinal McIntyre on January 21, 1970.

On March 5, 1973 took him by Pope Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Lucia a Piazza d' Armi in the College of Cardinals.

Pope John Paul II took on July 12, 1985 to its age-related withdrawal. Timothy Manning died on June 23, 1989 in Los Angeles, and was buried at Calvary Cemetery.
