Tindouf Province

The Tindouf (Arabic ولاية تندوف, DMG Wilāyat Tinduf ) Province is a province ( wilaya ) in the far west of Algeria.

The provincial capital is Tindouf.

The province is located in the Sahara and bordering Morocco, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic ( Western Sahara ) and Mauritania and covers an area of ​​182 838 km2. This area represents the single Algerian land access to the western Sahara and thus has strategic importance. There is also in this area ore and phosphates, which were another reason for the outbreak of Tindouf war between Morocco and Algeria in October 1963.

The official population is 48,000 ( 2006 estimate ), thus the population density around 0.3 inhabitants per square kilometer would be. Not included in the calculation, in this number, however, are the inhabitants of several large refugee camps, who have fled in the wake of the Western Sahara conflict in the region. The population of these camps is estimated at around 165,000 inhabitants.
