Tissamaharama ( Sinhala තිස්සමහාරාමය tissəma ˌ ha ː ra ː məjə ) is a small city in southeastern Sri Lanka. It was since the 3rd century BC capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna. Few historic buildings have been preserved; the large artificial lake Tissa Wewa, was part of a sophisticated irrigation system, dates from this period. Today, the city serves primarily as a starting point for visits to Yala National Park and the pilgrimage town of Kataragama.
