Hambantota District
Hambantota is a district in the Southern Province in Sri Lanka. It has an area of 2,609 km ². Capital is Hambantota.

The population was 2012 596.617 people according to the census.

History
Because of its location on the southeastern coast met in 2004 by an earthquake -triggered tsunami, the coast with full force. At that time, 2'739 people died according to official figures in the district of Hambantota. More 56'135 displaced and retreated partially injuries.
Management
The head of the district is entitled District Secretary. The district is further divided into twelve divisions ( under a Division Secretary ). The cities and larger towns have their own government ( municipal council or municipal council ). There are 576 community councils ( Grama Niladharis ) for the 1,319 villages throughout the district.
Economy and infrastructure
In mid-August 2010, a new port was opened with four terminals in Hambantota. The project cost six billion dollars and was built with the financial support from China.
