Puttalam District
Puttalam is a district in the North West Province in Sri Lanka. It has an area of 3'072 km ². Capital is Puttalam.
Population
The population in 2001 was 709'677 people according to the census.

The district was divided in 1958 Chilaw is already included in the figures of 1953.

The only great places in the district are Puttalam and Chilaw.
Management
The head of the district is entitled District Secretary. The district is further divided into sixteen divisions ( under a Division Secretary ). The cities and larger towns have their own government ( municipal council or municipal council ). There are 548 community councils ( Grama Niladharis ) for the 1,382 villages throughout the district.
History
In 1958 was the (larger ) District of Chilaw ( 1953:170 '100 inhabitants) incorporated into the (smaller) Puttalam district ( 1953:58 '800 inhabitants).
