Ampara District
Ampara is a district in the Eastern Province in Sri Lanka. It has an area of 4415 km ². Capital is Ampara.

The population was 648 057 in 2012 according to the census.

History
The district is a new foundation of the postwar period. It was created in 1958 from parts of the former district of Batticaloa.
Management
The head of the district is entitled District Secretary. The district is further divided into 20 divisions ( under a Division Secretary ). The cities and larger towns have their own government ( municipal council or municipal council ). There are 507 community councils ( Grama Niladharis ) for 876 villages in the entire district.
