Trincomalee District
Trincomalee is a district in the Eastern Province in Sri Lanka. It has an area of 2,729 km ². Capital is Trincomalee. The district was badly affected by the civil war in Sri Lanka and is claimed as a district in the required state of Tamil Eelam. In Mavil Aru (an area in Trincomalee ) blazed the civil war in 2006 again, in which took place the first major battles.

Since parts of the district in 2001 under the control of the LTTE were, at that time no district-wide census was held. This was made up in 2007.

Local Government
The head of the district is entitled District Secretary. The district is further divided into eleven divisions ( under a Division Secretary ). The cities and larger towns have their own government ( municipal council or municipal council ). There are 230 community councils ( Grama Niladharis ) for 645 villages in the entire district.
History
Because of its location on the east coast met in 2004 by an earthquake -triggered tsunami, the coast with full force. At that time, 967 people were killed according to official figures in Batticaloa district. More 126'679 homeless and subjected to partial injury.
