Tiznit (Arabic تيزنيت, Tiznit DMG ) is a city in the south of Morocco in the Souss -Massa- Daraâ and is the administrative seat of the homonymous province. The city has about 55,000 inhabitants ( 2005). It is located about 90 kilometers south of Agadir between the foothills of the Anti-Atlas and the Atlantic Ocean.

History

Tiznit was a bastion against the Berbers, and was founded in 1882 by the Sultan Moulay al -Hassan Alawite I..

During the period when Morocco was French protectorate, the Berber directed their activities against the French and took the city in 1912 for their purposes.

Cityscape

The city has a 1882 built six kilometers long city wall with 36 towers and eight gates. There is a small Tiznit Medina, number of trading venues and the main square Place du Méchouar.

The Grande Mosquée (Grand Mosque) was built in the early 20th century.

Tiznit has developed into a center of arts and crafts of the silver smithy.
