Toetoes Bay

The Toetoes Bay is the easternmost of three large bays on the coast of Foveaux Street in the New Zealand region Southland, the other two are the Te Waewae Bay and Oreti Beach.

The bay is 20 kilometers long and forms the southern end of the Awarua Plain, a swampy area which extends about 15 miles inland. The eastern end of the bay is located near Slope Point the most southerly point of the South Island and starting point of the Catlins.

Tiwai Point aluminum smelter with his lies on a peninsula on the western end of the bay on the edge of Bluff Harbour. The lagoon Waituna Lagoon is located halfway along the bay. Near its eastern end of the Mataura River empties into the Foveaux Strait. Immediately upstream of the mouth it flows through another lagoon, Totoes Harbour, where the place is Fortrose.
