The Tooma River is a river in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales.

It rises on the southwest slopes of Mount Jagungal in the Snowy Mountains and drains a portion of the western Kosciuszko National Park. It first flows a few kilometers to the west, then turns its course to the north and west again later. South of the town Welaregang it flows into the Murray River.

The Tooma is about 50 km long, but has a seasonally fluctuating water level because it removes the water from the snow melt.

The Tooma Reservoir, part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro - system, collects the waters of the river in the upper reaches and runs it from the Tumut Tumut River Pondage on where it is used to generate electricity to power stations in the Tumut River.

This derivation provides for a transfer of water from the catchment area of the Murray River in the Murrumbidgee River, in the Tumut River flows. But there are other parts of the Snowy Mountains Hydro -Systems counter-transference.
