Toporec
Toporec ( German Topportz or Topertz, Hungarian Toporc ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia.
Location
It lies in the Podtatranská kotlina at the foot of the Zipser Magura on Toporec Creek, 4 km from Podolínec and 17 km from Kežmarok.
History
The village was first mentioned in 1256. In 1297 there were two places called Toporec: the "Old Toporec " ( Antiqua Toprich ) and the " New Toporec " ( Noua Toprich ); the older village was located at the present settlement Pustovec ( about 4 km to the northwest ). Over time, the two were combined villages.
Artúr Görgey (1818-1916), Hungarian general during the Revolution of 1848/ 49 was born here.
