Tortum is a city in the province of Erzurum in northeastern Turkey and also the administrative center of the homonymous district ( Ilce ). The town has 4,279 inhabitants Tortum and the county 23,435 (as of 2008 ).

The county Tortum located north of the province, bordering with a small part of the province of Artvin, the next district towns are Uzundere in the north and in the east Narman. The north of the Tortum Çayı middle flows through the area. The river widens about 40 kilometers north of the reservoir Tortum Gölü before it empties into the Çoruh. The mountains, the steep rise at the edge of the plain, reaching heights of over 2,500 meters.

The city is located about 50 kilometers north of Erzurum on the east bank of the river directly under one of the rock mountains. The star-shaped from the vast square outside the town hall outgoing roads form the compact business center.

Tortumkale is a fortress from the Georgian period in the same village, which is about five kilometers north after another six kilometers in a mountain valley to reach from the branch from the main street of the city to the west.
