Toyota Land Cruiser (J40)

The Toyota Bandeirante was built in Brazil execution of the Land Cruiser J4 of the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota in the Toyota do Brasil Ltda. purpose-built factory in São Bernardo do Campo, SP, under the model designation Bandeirante series key J5 - was created - not to be confused with the built facing the United States in Japan series Land Cruiser J5.

Model Name

The " Bandeirantes " were in Brazil's history, the pioneers and adventurers who explored the coast from the inland and settled and the exploitation of its natural resources paved the way. The best known Bandeiras came from the southeast of present-day State of São Paulo.

So lets " Bandeirante " purely linguistic simultaneously with the English terms " Land Rover " and " Land Cruiser " translate.

Beginnings: Land Cruiser FJ -251 and FJ -151

The first Bandeirantes which from May 1959, the assembly hall of the Brazilian subsidiary Toyota Toyota do Brasil in the district of Ipiranga in São Paulo, São Paulo left, were Assemblies of the Land Cruiser FJ -251, imported from Japan and have been assembled in Brazil. Until December 1959, however, were already 60 % of the parts manufactured in Brazil.

Equipped in the simplest and extremely resistant mechanism was the Land Cruiser FJ -251 exactly what the former Brazil needed. The FJ -251 was a short open -road vehicle with 3830 mm length and 2280 mm wheelbase, which weighed 1450 kg and could accommodate up to ten people (without luggage). Original engine was the Toyota F, a low-speed petrol engine 3.9 ( 3878 cc ) with six cylinders. Top speed was 100 km / h

Often, a low-speed petrol engine called Toyota 2F is mentioned, a 4.0 without more detailed information, also with six cylinders, which developed 110 hp at 2000 rpm. More detailed information is not currently not found; one can only speculate that it developed here to a Toyota for Brazil and possibly manufactured in Brazil itself amendment could act, if any Brazilian automotive historian would undergo a Motorenverwechselung. The possibility of an amendment for Brazil offers to the time given the already high Brazilian gasoline prices and the high fuel consumption of Toyota F and the fact that it was not yet so all 300 km was a gas station as it is today, quite to. Anyway, this thing today only difficult to determine, since most then existing in Brazil explosion engine manufacturers have fallen in the years after 1964, the monopolization policy on multinational corporations by the military dictatorship victims. In any case, this should Toyota 2F - if true what is mentioned - not to be confused with the Toyota 2F produced from 1975 in Japan.

In all likelihood, it must have then been a Brazilian motor 2F because from 1960 to 1961, the FJ -251 was renamed FJ -151. This renaming clearly points to an engine change out and that another petrol engine F. We know that the FJ -151, very few copies were built, so that it occurs only rarely in the literature.

As of 1961, the FJ -151 also offered with soft top and the corresponding Land Cruiser received the code FJ- 151L, where L " Lona ( = top ) mean. But even in 1961 the petrol -indulgent F and / or 2Fmotoren were replaced with more economical diesel engines. It concerned it is of Mercedes -Benz do Brasil also produced in São Bernardo do Campo OM -324, low-speed diesel engines, 3.4 ( 3401 cc ) with four cylinders, which developed at 3000 rpm 78 hp and the vehicle for many years the nickname " Britadeira ( = jackhammer ) should yield ".

It was also prepared at Toyota from 1960/61, the Land Cruiser J2 in Brazil by the Land Cruiser J4, but with changes - including the Mercedes- Benz diesel engines - to replace. And thanks to these changes, the Brazilian version of the J4 should be passed as Bandeirante J5. The bodies for the Land Cruiser / Bandeirante came from 1961 by Brasinca in São Caetano do Sul, SP.

In November 1962, with the completion of Toyota's new factory in São Bernardo do Campo, SP, Toyota began the construction of the Bandeirante J5. From 1968, the Bandeirante was then entirely made exclusively Brazilian parts.

Flowering period: Bandeirante OJ OJ 50 and 55 series

The exterior of the Bandeirante has received only a few changes.

In 1983, a pick -up enriched the model range. In addition, rectangular headlights instead of the round have been introduced, which distinguishes the Bandeirante of all models of the J4 series to date.

In 1985, a better instrument panel has been added. In 1987, the brakes were improved, which was a major weakness in previous models.

1993 was offered for the first time a 5 -speed manual transmission.

Also, Toyota introduced a four-door 1999 Double Cab. This was a body shape that it had never been in the J4 series.

The 100,000. Bandeirante also ran in 1999 from the band, which was celebrated with a special model.

End: Bandeirante BJ 50 and BJ 55 series

The end of the Bandeirante actually began in 1991, when Brazil lifted the ban on the import of vehicles. Until then, many manufacturers did not bother to build their vehicles in Brazil. With the import of more modern and cheaper cars, demand dropped significantly after the Bandeirante.

Since the 14B engine, valid from the 2002 exhaust emission regulations did not meet, Toyota introduced in 2000 by a study to examine whether any of the more modern diesel could replace the 14B. But in the end Toyota decided that it was not worth the trouble. Instead of the old Land Cruiser still expanding, Toyota put him forever silent.

On 28 November 2001, the last Bandeirante rolled off the assembly line.
