Tremelo is a Belgian municipality located in the Flemish region with 14,679 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012).

Local situation and districts

Tremelo is located at the mouth of the river Demer in the Dyle. Leuven is 10 km south, the city center of Brussels and Antwerp 28 km southwest 30 km northwest.

The community Tremelo comprises the main town and the villages of Baal and Ninde.

Birthplace of Damian de Veuster and Sanctuary

Nationally known as the home of the Tremelo is canonized Father Damien de Picpus Veuster. He was born on January 3, 1840 in Ninde, a 1975 eingemeindeten district of Tremelo. Soon after his death in 1889 began pilgrims visit his habitat. On the occasion of his canonization on 11 October 2009, a festival was celebrated ( in the presence of the Belgian royal couple and many guests from Hawaii) and a monument unveiled.

In the birthplace of Damian de Veuster is the Damianmuseum ( Flemish: Damiaanmuseum ).

Transport links

The next highway exits are located to the east in Aarschot and Holsbeek on A 2 and in the west at Weerde and Mechelen on the A1/E19.

Inter alia in Haacht, lions and Aarschot offers the nearest regional stations.
