Trial by Fire - Live in Leningrad is the first live album by the Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen and was published in 1989.

Origin and recording

The album was recorded in February 1988 with a performance by Malmsteen and band in the former Lenin Sports and concert complex, today SKK Peterburgski, in Leningrad. The performance was part of a comprehensive 20 concerts tour of the Soviet Union, which attracted 240,000 viewers. Background of the tour had been, among other things, that Malmsteen was re-elected in Soviet periodicals for best guitarist.

According to the keyboardist Jens Johansson the recordings were largely replaced by later overdubs. From the original live recording only the drums and most of keyboard solos to have been used.

After this album changed the entire cast to Yngwie Malmsteen.

Notes to pieces

When two pieces ( Dreamin and Black Star ) Malmsteen uses a classic Gibson Chet Atkins solid body guitar. This is mounted in a rack, such as Carlos Santana such uses for his classical guitar also in the beginning of the video of Maria Maria to switch between classical guitar and electric guitar. The advantage of the classic Gibson Chet Atkins solidbody after Malmsteen's statement that it does not produce feedback in spite of high volume.

In the song You Do not Remember I'll Never Forget ( Studio version from the album Trilogy 1986) Yngwie quotes the song Greensleeves. Then he quotes with Joe Lynn Turner in a slightly different form the well-known Ian Gillan / Ritchie Blackmore improvisation in Strange Kind of Woman by Made in Japan, where Blackmore plays to something on the guitar and Gillan imitates. He further cited in this song also Love Is Blue. Love Is Blue Greensleeves and have been covered in the '60s by guitarist Jeff Beck. Greensleeves was from the Malmsteen model Ritchie Blackmore with Rainbowund Blackmore's Nightgecovert.

In the instrumental Blackstar Malmsteen plays on a classic Gibson Chet Atkins Solid Body as an intro of Johann Sebastian Bach 's famous Air the third orchestral suite, while the original in D Major, he plays on the guitar in G major. By Hendrix mood that uses Malmsteen, but the whole thing sounds in the key of F # major. From this Air from Bach Uli Jon Roth has also created a recording with guitar.

This album is a transcription only in Japan.
