Trihexyphenidyl, also known as benzhexol and Trihex, is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of muscarinic receptor antagonists similar to that of atropine. Trihexyphenidyl selectively inhibits the action of acetylcholine at the muscarinic M1 - receptors in the striatum of the brain. Trihexyphenidyl is an anticholinergic and is used as an anti -Parkinson drug. It has been approved since 1951 under the trade name Artane and Parkopan.
Effect
Trihexyphenidyl has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscle. This reduces tremor in Parkinson's disease.
Production and representation
Trihexyphenidyl may be represented in two ways. In the first step of route 1, 2 - ( 1- piperidino ) propiophenone obtained by aminomethylation of acetophenone with paraformaldehyde and piperidine ( Mannich reaction). In the second step, this reacts with cyclohexyl magnesium bromide in a Grignard reaction
