U. Srinivas

U. Shrinivas ( Upalappu Shrinivas; born February 28, 1969 in Palakol, Andhra Pradesh ) is an Indian mandolin player who has his musical roots in the Carnatic music tradition (South Indian classical). He became internationally known among other things for his work with John McLaughlin Remember Shakti as part of the project.

Musical Career

At the age of six years Shrinivas began to play on the mandolin his father Satyanarayana. When he noticed his talent, he taught him what he knew of Carnatic music. Shortly thereafter, his father Guru Rudraraju Subbaraju recognized ( a well-known Carnatic singer) his potential and began to teach him. Since Rudraraju Subbaraju not played mandolin, he sang Shrinivas off what should play this.

Early on, he was one of the prodigies of Carnatic music and is the first known Carnatic mandolin. The Indian mandolin has little resemblance to the European mandolin. She is five-sided, more reminiscent of a small electric guitar. Shrinivas has it adapted to the requirements of Carnatic music, in which she established.

His first public appearance was in 1978 on the Thyagaraja Aradhana Shrinivas Festival ( a festival of Carnatic music) in Gudivada ( Andhra Pradesh, India). Three years later he played during the Madras Music Season. In 1983 he took part in the Berlin Jazz Festival. Shrinivas occurs worldwide and conducts the " Shrinivas Institute of World Music", a music school he founded.

Cooperation

Shrinivas played both with the western musicians John McLaughlin, Michael Brook, Nigel Kennedy, Nana Vasconcelos together as well as with Indian musicians like Hariprasad Chaurasia, Zakir Hussain and V. Selvaganesh.
