Ulan-Ude

Ulan -Ude (Russian Улан - Удэ; Buryat Улаан - Үдэ, Ulaan - Üde ) is the capital of the Russian republic of Buryatia in southeastern Siberia. It has 404 426 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and is the cultural, political and economic center of the region.

Location

Ulan -Ude is about 4400 km east of Moscow, 150 km southeast of Lake Baikal and at about 600 m above sea level. NN at the confluence of the Uda in the Selenga.

Ulan -Ude is a transport interchange at the junction of the Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian railway. The city is the cultural and economic center of Transbaikalia. The urban public transport consists of trams and bus and Marschrutka lines. In addition, it houses the State Aircraft Factory No. 99, which also produces Mil Mi- 14 Mil Mi -8 as well as the Sukhoi Su-25 and others.

History

The settlement Udinskoje (Russian Удинское ) was founded in 1666 as a wintering station of Cossacks on the Uda River, a tributary of the Selenga and raised 1775 as Verkhneudinsk (Russian Верхнеудинск ) to the city. After a major fire in 1878, the town was completely rebuilt. Since 27 July 1934, it bears its present name Ulan -Ude ( Buryat for Red Uda ). Today the city is the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Buryatia in Russia.

Attractions

Not far from Ulan -Ude, near the village of Iwolginsk, there is a Buddhist monastery ( Ivolginsky Dazan ).

Eight kilometers northeast of the city, the Ethnographic Museum of Transbaikalia, testifies to the historical presence of various ethnic groups in the region:

  • The Evenki, the original inhabitants of the region,
  • The Buryats, traditionally committed to the Vajrayana Buddhism of mongolischstämmigen people,
  • The Semeiskije, a faith community of so-called Old Believers, whose culture in 2001 by UNESCO under the name " The Cultural Space and Oral Culture of Semeiskije " was included in the list of " Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity "
  • And the Russians.

At the south-eastern outskirts the " Huns city " is ( Iwolginsker hillfort settlement ) with the remains of a city of the Xiongnu from the 3rd -1. century BC, one of the largest archaeological sites in the region.

The city is known for its monumental Lenin monument, the largest bust in the world.

In Ulan- Ude, there are also several Orthodox church buildings, including the Odigitrijewski Cathedral.
