Ulrich Ensingen

Ulrich Ensinger, Ulrich von Ensingen and Ulricus Fissingen de elm, (* 1350 Ensingen at Ulm or Oberensingen at Nürtingen / Swabia, † February 10, 1419 in Strasbourg ) was a master builder of the South German Gothic.

Life

Ulrich von Ensingen was the progenitor of the foreman family Ensinger. He was married to the daughter of Hans ( * ca 1390 ), son of Conrad Glaser ( about 1325 to about 1393 ). Ulrich von Ensingen had at least three sons and two daughters. The daughter Anna († 1429) married Hans Kun, who was just like their son Kaspar Kun Münster builder at the Ulm Münster. The daughter Ursula (1386-1430) went to the monastery as Conventfrau Weil. His three sons Kaspar, Matthew and Mathias also learned the builder crafts. Matthew and his grandson Moritz continued his work and followed him as Ulm Cathedral architect. Matthew and his son Vincent from his first marriage continued the construction of the Esslinger Frauenkirche.

Work

Already in 1391 he is mentioned as a champion. He built from 1392 to 1417 at the Ulmer Münster, where he continued the nave already started up in half height and put the plan change from the originally vorgesehehen Church Hall to the basilica. His design for the cathedral tower has been preserved in the city of Ulm Museum. The crack of 70.4 cm wide and 306.5 inches, which consists of five large and two small leaves, is one of the most important Gothic architectural drawings. Only the lower floors of the tower could build Ensinger. Matthew Böblinger built according to their own plans continue, but the west tower remained unfinished in the Middle Ages (chorus towers and tower West are works of the 19th century ). From 1394 to 1395 Ensinger built at the Milan Cathedral. 1399 he was appointed to Strasbourg, where he built the octagonal north tower until his death on the platform of Strasbourg Cathedral to the base of the helmet. He was also from 1400, the architect who designed the tower of Esslinger Frauenkirche and construction began. In 1414 he delivered the design for the George storm of Basel Cathedral. None of his works was completed in his lifetime, many continued in a modified form.

The tower of Strasbourg Cathedral is considered his masterpiece, which is one of the most ingenious designs of the Gothic tower, although the completion happened here until after his death.
