Ulrich Rülein von Calw

Ulrich Rülein of Calw (* July 4, 1465 in Calw, † 1523 in Leipzig) was a humanist, doctor, mathematician and scientist known mining. In addition, he worked as a surveyor, town planner and astrologer, and five years mayor of the mining town of Freiberg.

Life and work

From 1485 studied Ulrich Rülein of Calw at the University of Leipzig. In 1490 he was bachelor and master of arts and then studied medicine and mathematics. From the Saxon Elector George, he was commissioned a " Neustadt am Schreckenberg " to build the present-day town of Annaberg. 1497 Rülein of Calw was appointed by the town of Freiberg, the town physician. Here he worked as a surveying and civil engineering, mining expert and astrologer. 1505 his book appeared in Augsburg Eyn well organized and useful book, how to seek and find mine, the first scientific treatise on mining in Germany. As a doctor, he fought in 1497 against the plague.

In 1508 he became a citizen of Freiberg, alderman and 1514-1519 reigning mayor. Ulrich Rülein of Calw in 1515 founded the first grammar school in Saxony. He was inducted into the Freiberg Miners in 1519, but left because of hostility towards his school in 1519 Freiberg and went to Leipzig, where he worked as a professor of medicine. His last job, identify the location and development of the development plan for Marienberg he got in 1521 by Henry the Pious.
