The University of Messina (Italian: Università degli Studi di Messina, Latin: Universitas Studiorum Messanae ) is a university in Messina, Italy.

History

The University of Messina 1548 following approval by Pope Paul III. founded as a studium generale of the Jesuits, however, against the resistance of the urban elite, which sought a stronger own influence. Only in 1591 it came to an agreement that converted the College against a financing through the city to a general university. Also, the resistance of the Siculorum school could be overcome. In the statutes of 1597, the influence of the Jesuits is forced back further, although the legal basis to continue the bull Copiosus in Misericordia Dominus Paul III. remained. Until 1641 the Archbishop of Messina served as Chancellor of the University, then the post was taken directly from the Senate of the city. 1679, the university was closed by the Spaniards after the suppression of the measurement Ineser revolt ( 1674-1678 ) and only founded in 1838 by Ferdinand I new.

The mathematician and polymath Francesco Maurolico was appointed professor at the University of Messina in 1569, 1635 laid the botanist Pietro Castelli the botanical garden of the university.
