University of Tirana

The University of Tirana (Albanian Universiteti i Tiranës ) is a public university in the Albanian capital of Tirana and with over 26,500 students and 600 academic staff, the largest university in Albania. The main building, originally built in the early 1940s as the Casa di Fascio by the Italians, is at the Mother Teresa Square, south of downtown.
History
The University of Tirana was established in 1957 as the first university in Albania with a total of six faculties under the name State University of Tirana. In 1968, the so-called Qyteti was the construction of the campus in the southeast of Tirana, Studenti ( Student City ) started. 1977, the number of students increased to about 8880, of which about half were female.
Early 1990s was the University of Tirana is one of the most important centers of the democratic movement in the former communist Albania. The first student protests in November 1990 students called for the introduction of democracy and pluralistic elections. In December of the same year students founded under Sali Berisha in the Qyteti Studenti the university, the Democratic Party of Albania, the first non-communist party.
In 1991, the Polytechnic Institute became independent as Polytechnic University of Tirana.
The University is a member of the network of Balkan universities.
