Uruguayan general election, 1946

The presidential and parliamentary elections in Uruguay in 1946 found on Sunday, 24 November 1946.

From the simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections was the Partido Colorado, which included three Sublemas, emerged as the winner. Tomás Berreta of the Partido Colorado has been elected president. He took office on March 1, 1947. Luis Batlle Berres was Vice President. In the elections, the electoral system was aligned so-called Lema system of relative majority, both the President and the deputies and senators were elected under a proportional representation for a term of four years.

The allocation of seats for the House of Representatives was as follows:

  • Partido Colorado: 47.5 % ( the two strongest Sublema each combined 11.1% of the vote )
  • Partido Nacional: 31.3 %
  • Other parties: 21.2%

The distribution of seats in the Cámara de Senadores:

  • Partido Colorado: 50 %
  • Partido Nacional: 33.3 %
  • Other parties: Partido Nacional Independiente 10%
  • Other: 6.6%
