Ust-Luga

Ust- Luga (Russian Усть - Луга, Finnish Laukaansuu ) is a rural settlement ( possjolok ) with 2173 inhabitants ( calculated 2007) in Russia. It lies at the mouth of the river Luga in the Lugabucht the Baltic Sea, near the border with Estonia. The name is derived from the Russian word for Ustje mouth.

Geography

Ust- Luga belongs to Rajon Kingissepp the Leningrad Oblast and is located approximately 100 km west of Saint Petersburg. The settlement is home to the rural community of Ust- Luschskoje selskoje posselenije to the next Ust- Luga nor the ten villages Gakkowo, Kaibolowo, Kirjamo, Konnowo, Krakolje, Lipowo, Luschizy, Meschniki, Tiskolowo and Wybje and the three settlements Kurgolowo, Preobraschenka and in the station Ust-Luga belong. The total population of the municipality is 2835 (14 October 2010).

History

The place was first mentioned in 1676 on a Swedish map of 1676 Ostroff Hoff, of Russian Ostrow ("Island "). This name was in use until the 20th century. In the 19th century the village was mentioned as ischorische settlement with the ischorischen / Finnish name Laukaansuu.

Economy

In Ust- Luga is the same important seaport, including a ferry for rail, car and passenger traffic between the Russian mainland, Kaliningrad Oblast ( ferry terminal Baltijsk ); as German ports of Kiel and since June 8, 2012, the Port of Sassnitz on Rügen be run regularly. Since 2001, the expansion was started to export port for Russian raw materials with the completion of the first stage of the coal terminals. Since 2011, built by NCC and Euro Gate Container Terminal is in operation. By 2012, an export terminal for up to 28 million barrels of crude oil to be ready. This new port will drain the capacity of the port in Tallinn, Estonia.
