Utekáč

Utekáč (Hungarian Újantalvölgy ) is a village and a municipality in the district Poltár in the region Banskobystrický kraj in Slovakia.

Past and present

The municipality is located in Utekáč Veporské Hills in the narrow valley of the river Rimavica. The name is derived from the flight (Slovak Útek ) of King Bela IV from the Tatars.

The first written mention of Utekáč dates from 1593. Development began with the arrival of the Prince-Bishop Ferenc Forgách to. He built some glassworks from here. The largest of the glassworks, Clara, exists to this day. The original inhabitants of the glassworks settlement were families of master glassblowers from Germany, Hungary, Bohemia and Moravia.

The recent history begins on January 1, 1993 - the community was self-employed. Before Utekáč was a part of the industry to the southeast lying community Kokava nad Rimavicou. The industrial and residential remembered today Utekáč more like a city. The districts Salajka, Drahová, Havrilovo, Dlhá Lúka Ďurkovka, Banik nad Rimavou and Cisársko are typical hamlets and historic architecture. In the district Salajka are Finnish wooden houses. The castle of Count Forgáč and the Chapel of Saint Anthony Paduánsky, the burial place of Kuchynkovci family - is owner of the glassworks, form the dominant features of the community. In the districts Drahová and Havrilovo there are interesting chapels.

From the village Utekáč the trio Kubincovci comes. They were known Schalmeibläser and the shawm also produced.

During the Slovak National Uprising in 1944, there was heavy fighting in the local area. At these events and a memorial monument to the war dead in the town park and Nikolaj - Chmielnicki Valley with three memorial stones.

The area offers good conditions for tourists, anglers and mushroom pickers. The community has a convenient location for the development of tourism. In the winter, skiing and cross-country skiing is possible. The ski lifts are in Utekac and in the vicinity.
