Valkhof museum

The Museum Valkhof is an art and cultural history museum in Nijmegen, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The museum was founded in 1999 by merging the archaeological collection of the museum GM Kam and founded the art collection of the St. John Commandery van. The house belongs to the German-Dutch partnership Crossart.

Collections

The archaeological section houses an extensive collection of archaeological finds to the prehistory and early history, as well as the Roman and medieval history of the city and region. The exhibition is divided into themes such as religion, death and burial, trade and crafts and daily life. Particularly important is the stock of Roman finds, as Novio Magus, today Nijmegen, the most important city of the Roman Empire was on Dutch territory.

The Art Department shows paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures and silver objects. This exhibition is divided into thematic areas Nijmegen as a medieval trading town, guilds, the flower of the city in the Golden Age, as well as views of the city from the 17th to the 20th century.

The Department of Modern Art presents works of pop art and contemporary expressionism since 1960.

Special

The museum offers regularly changing exhibitions on the collection areas of the house. One of the most acclaimed special was the exhibition held from August 30 to November 20, 2005 medieval miniatures with the works of the Limbourg Brothers.

Building

The museum is located on the edge of Valkhof Valkhofparks in the center of Nijmegen. On this site was once a Roman fort, on the later Emperor Charlemagne built a palace here. The present building was designed by Ben van Berkel and opened on 14 September 1999 by Queen Beatrix. Construction is set with its sleek lines and bright colors in stark contrast to the park.
