Varakļāni

Varakļāni ( German: Warkland or Warkelen ) is a small town in eastern Latvia.

History

In historical sources Varakļāni was first mentioned in 1483. 1789 mansion with gardens and ponds was by Count Michael Borch, whose family had already purchased the place with an estate in 1583, created.

In 1854, Count Karol Borch a Catholic church. At the end of the 19th century Protestant church built in Varakļāni. The status of a city has Varakļāni since 1928. 1944, during the Second World War, Varakļāni was badly damaged. The Protestant church burned down. Beginning of the 21st century, it was restored and is now used again for worship.

Varakļānu novads

Since 2009, there is an administrative community with two adjacent rural communities. ( See also: Administrative divisions of Latvia ). 2010, reported 3915 inhabitants.
