Veigy-Foncenex

Veigy -Foncenex is a twin village in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Veigy -Foncenex situated on 430 m above sea level. M., 10 km east of Geneva ( distance), close to the border with Switzerland. The community extends in the plane of the Bas -Chablais, on the Hermance, south of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​12.99 km ² municipal area includes a little in relief section of the plane of the Bas -Chablais. The plateau, which is about 60 m higher than the lake level of Lake Geneva, is slightly inclined towards the northwest. It is drained by the Hermance and its tributaries. East of the village are the vast forests Bois Saint- Jean, Bois d' Avuilly and Bois des Arrales. The highest elevation is 470 m above sea level. M. reached at the western foot of Mont de Boisy.

The municipality consists of the villages Veigy (431 m above sea level. M. ) and Foncenex ( 449 m above sea level. M. ) and the hamlet settlements Crévy (425 m above sea level. M. ) and Les Cabrettes (420 m above sea level. M. ). Neighboring communities of Veigy -Foncenex are Chens- sur -Léman to the north, and Loisin Machilly the east, and the Swiss towns Gy to the south, Corsier (GE), Anières and Hermance in the West.

History

The area around Veigy -Foncenex been inhabited since the Roman era. Veigy is first mentioned in 1287 as Veigyer. This was followed by the names Vegier, Veigié, Veygier, Vegy and Veigier.

In the Middle Ages, the region formed around Veigy -Foncenex during long been a bone of contention between the counties of Savoy, Faucigny and Geneva, to 1355 came the whole territory of the Counts of Savoy. From 1536 to 1567 (Treaty of Lausanne), the area was under Bernese domination. After Savoy was occupied in 1792 by France, the then very small communities and Veigy Foncenex were united in 1793 to form a double community.

With 3633 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Veigy -Foncenex belongs to the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region.
