Veigy-Foncenex
Veigy -Foncenex is a twin village in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.
Geography
Veigy -Foncenex situated on 430 m above sea level. M., 10 km east of Geneva ( distance), close to the border with Switzerland. The community extends in the plane of the Bas -Chablais, on the Hermance, south of Lake Geneva.
The area of 12.99 km ² municipal area includes a little in relief section of the plane of the Bas -Chablais. The plateau, which is about 60 m higher than the lake level of Lake Geneva, is slightly inclined towards the northwest. It is drained by the Hermance and its tributaries. East of the village are the vast forests Bois Saint- Jean, Bois d' Avuilly and Bois des Arrales. The highest elevation is 470 m above sea level. M. reached at the western foot of Mont de Boisy.
The municipality consists of the villages Veigy (431 m above sea level. M. ) and Foncenex ( 449 m above sea level. M. ) and the hamlet settlements Crévy (425 m above sea level. M. ) and Les Cabrettes (420 m above sea level. M. ). Neighboring communities of Veigy -Foncenex are Chens- sur -Léman to the north, and Loisin Machilly the east, and the Swiss towns Gy to the south, Corsier (GE), Anières and Hermance in the West.
History
The area around Veigy -Foncenex been inhabited since the Roman era. Veigy is first mentioned in 1287 as Veigyer. This was followed by the names Vegier, Veigié, Veygier, Vegy and Veigier.
In the Middle Ages, the region formed around Veigy -Foncenex during long been a bone of contention between the counties of Savoy, Faucigny and Geneva, to 1355 came the whole territory of the Counts of Savoy. From 1536 to 1567 (Treaty of Lausanne), the area was under Bernese domination. After Savoy was occupied in 1792 by France, the then very small communities and Veigy Foncenex were united in 1793 to form a double community.
Attractions
The village church of Veigy was built in the period 1717-1729. Of the secular buildings, the palaces Château de Veigy and Château de Crévy are worth mentioning.
Population
With 3633 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Veigy -Foncenex belongs to the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. For several decades, the population is continually growing, driven mainly by rising property prices in the neighboring canton of Geneva. Outside the old village cores to extended family house neighborhoods formed with a high proportion of Swiss; also currently occur along the main street of Veigy in several extensive projects masse apartments for upper-income classes that high-income commuters are also targeted in the first place.
Economy and infrastructure
Veigy -Foncenex was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are various businesses of the local small businesses as well as construction and commercial enterprises and in the center of Veigy several restaurants, bakeries, a bio and two barber shops. A newly built shopping center with a large supermarket and numerous smaller shops outside the village center contributed beside shop rents covered the closure of many shops in the town center; this find today partly as a pure showcase areas for real estate agent use.
Many working population commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work. Many of them are commuters who work in the city of Geneva.
In the center of Veigy exist next to a primary school and extensive sports facilities and a daycare center and a new multi-purpose building that houses a library with multimedia and Internet facilities as well as group rooms and a cafeteria for children, youth and senior activities.
The village centers of Veigy and Foncenex are off the major thoroughfares, but are easily accessible from the main street of Geneva - to reach Thonon -les- Bains. Further road links exist with Tholomaz ( access to the main road towards Annemasse ) and with Gy and Meinier in the Canton of Geneva. Contrary to the remaining signs is the road to Meinier since early 2007 open around the clock; the community Gy, however, has re- introduced to avoid nightly through traffic the closure of the border crossing to Veigy -Foncenex zwischen 19.45 und 7.00 clock as of December 2007.
