Geographical Location

The core community is located on the banks of the Werra River, which separates the ( referred to in Veilsdorf Weihbach or Wäbich ) from the partnership base through which the nucleus and the immediately adjacent east Schacksdorf of Veilsdorf monastery north of the core site and the 3 km west away Heßberg. Goßmannsrod located 4 km northeast of the core village on the Schwaba, Hetschbach 3 km south close to the Rhine -Weser watershed.

History

In the year 817 Veilsdorf was first mentioned in a deed of Fulda. There have been several name spellings: Fiselestorp, file Dorff, Vilesdorp, Veihelsdorff, Feielsdorf, Veylsdorf.

Near the village there was a Benedictine nunnery, which most likely was a fortification before and was then dedicated to the Archangel Michael. 1189 the monastery was first mentioned. 1446 the convent was converted into a monastery. This was burned down during the Peasants' War of 1524/25 by pawns.

In the north- east of the village there was a castle, the Trigelsburg ( Ingilinburg, Friselenburg ) and its opposite - above the cemetery church - the castle, called the stone house that served the knights and gentlemen of Veilsdorf as headquarters.

Veilsdorf 1616-1635 was affected by witch hunts. Two women got into witch trials. Anna, Cunz Steiniger woman was, in 1616 "cruel" tortured. Nevertheless, the judge could extort a confession from her and she was released.

1760 was founded in Veilsdorf by Prince Eugene of Saxony- Hildburghausen a porcelain factory.

1863 and 1883 were held devastating fires, which in both cases the majority of the village was destroyed. In 1903, the steeple of Trinity Church was burnt down by lightning.

20th century

During the Second World War, more than 200 women and men were mainly from the Soviet Union and Poland in the china factory monastery Veilsdorf forced labor.

In Heßberg there was a manor which belonged until 1945 to the family of Acorn Streiber. The mansion was under command of the SMAD 209, despite protests from the residents demolished in 1948.

On 29 November 1994 Heßberg was incorporated.

Memorials

  • Since 1984, recalls in the cemetery of the district Goßmannsrod a tomb with a memorial stone to the communist resistance fighters Albin Fischer, who was persecuted with prison sentences and deported to Ravensbruck concentration camp, where he was assassinated in 1945. The memorial was desecrated by unknown and removed after 1992.

In Veilsdorf is Itzgründisch, a main Franconian dialect spoken.

Economy and Transport

Economy

Since 1760 the porcelain is made in Veilsdorf. Today it is a work of Rauschert group with about 200 employees, which has focused on the production of technical ceramics. Major employer is next to the milk Land GmbH, among others, a country market with regional products and Edeka range, a breakfast and lunch supplies and a " milk - Café" operates alongside a modern dairy plant. A considerable part of the population commutes to work by Bad Unterrodach and Coburg in Upper Franconia.
