Velden am Wörthersee [ felden ] (Slovene: Vrba na Koroškem ) is a market town with 8742 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Villach-Land in Carinthia. The place is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria.

Velden occupies the western bay of Lake Wörth.

History

The earliest recorded mention of Velden dates back to 1150th The name is derived from Velben ( willow).

Since the 12th century the area belonged to the rule and Velden Castle Hohenwart who were in the course of the centuries in the possession of the Counts of Cilli and Ortenbourg, the Millstaetter St. George Knightly Order and the Habsburgs. 1545 acquired the Khevenhüller dominion over Landskron and Velden. The 1603 self- rule Velden went during the Counter Reformation in 1629 into the possession of the Counts of Dietrich stone.

With the dissolution of the rule by the Municipalities Act of 17 March 1849 municipal territory included the cadastral Velden, Augsdorf, Duel, Lind Emmer village, Kerschdorf, Kösternberg and sand. On January 1, 1850 was from these communities, the greater community of independent Velden, several times changed its size in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the restructuring of the community structure in Carinthia 1972/73 the municipality was returned to approximately the size of 1850.

In 1853, the liner shipping took the paddle steamer " Mary Worth " in their operation. Eleven years later, the Wörthersee was connected to the railway network by extending the south runway from Klagenfurt to Villach. In the same year, 1864, began with the opening of the first bathing establishment in Velden, the other soon followed, the development of a health resort.

On March 13, 1881, a major fire which destroyed the old peasant Velden and helped that Velden was expanded before the start of the bathing season in an exclusive residential -resort occurred.

The suffix " am Wörthersee " leads the congregation since 1893, market town of Velden is since 2 May 1947.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the market town of Velden a resident population of 8,545. Of these, 93.1 % have Austrian, 3.6% German and 1.8% Bosnian citizenship. The proportion of the Carinthian Slovenes in the total population is 2.8 %.

78.7 % of Velden profess the Roman Catholic Church, the Protestant 7.2% and 1.2% Islam, 8.6% of the population has no religious persuasion.

Religious buildings

  • The parish church of St. John the Baptist in Kranzlhofen was first documented in 1175-1181.
  • The parish church of Our Lady on the western edge of the village of Velden was built in 1937, was initially branch of Kranzlhofen and is since 1949 an independent parish.

Casino Velden

The casino was opened in 1922 and (today Casinos Austria AG) acquired in 1934 by the Austrian government Casino AG. A started in November 1987 New in 1989 handed over his destiny.

Emperor Fountain

To commemorate the 60th jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I ( 1848-1908 ) Emperor of the fountain near the Veldener Zugbahnhofes was built. He donates high source of drinking water. Renovated in the fountain, which is supplied from the waterworks in Velden misalignment Ling, in 1969.

Coat of arms

Since about 1900 a coat of arms was used by the community with the lock on a site occupied by water lilies Wellenschildfuß. The present form goes back to a draft local graphic designer Heinrich Ebner.

Wellenschildfuß and water lily characterize the position of the main town on Lake Wörth, the Mannerist castle portal from 1603 recalls the Khevenhüller and their pleasure palace in Velden. The coat of arms was the market town on September 4, 1965 officially awarded. The official blazon is:
