Verina

Aelia Verina († 484 ) was the wife of the Byzantine emperor Leo I. By her daughter Ariadne, she was the mother of the Emperor Zeno. About its origin is not known.

You already supported her son when the young Emperor Leo II, whose son and grandson, was still alive, but turned against him after his death in 474. Together with her lover Patricius, her brother Basiliscus, the Isauriergeneral Illus and the general Theodoric Strabo they conspired against Zenon and forced him to flee from Constantinople 475 Opel. Basiliscus was briefly emperor until Verina 476 with Zenon made ​​peace again.

Now Verina turned against Illus, who discovered the conspiracy and threw them into prison with Zeno's approval. This in turn led to a rebellion of her son- Marcian, a grandson of the same emperor, but in which this subject. The younger Marcian then went into exile.
