Vermilion Flycatcher ( Pyrocephalus rubinus ) ♂

The Vermilion Flycatcher ( Pyrocephalus rubinus ) is an American Schreivogel. Other names for this bird are ruby head or purple tyrant.

Features

The male is crimson on the head, chest and underside, colored brown on black back, wings, rump, tail and mask. The female has a gelbraune top, a whitish forehead, a black tail, a salmon-colored belly and a white, brown interspersed chest. The twelve subspecies of Rubin bully vary in plumage coloration. For example, the birds in South America almost completely dark colored, with single red feathers around the head or under the tail.

Occurrence

The breeding range extends from the southern United States to Argentina. The southern populations overwinter in the Amazon Basin, the northern Central America. The bird inhabits individual standing trees, bushes and sparse forests often in arid areas usually near water.

Reproduction

The suspended in a crotch cup nest made of thin branches and grasses is upholstered with animal hair and feathers. The female incubates the two to four eggs about two weeks, while the male defends the nest aggressively. Both parent birds feed the young after hatching. At a four breeding seasons study conducted in Texas, it was observed that the vermilion flycatchers relatively frequently been used for a second brood nests re-used ( in 12% of 120 cases). Surprisingly, the breeding success in the re- used nests was significantly higher.
