Vermilion River (Sudbury District)

BW

The Vermilion River (French Rivière Vermillion ) is a left tributary of the Spanish River in the Canadian province of Ontario.

The Vermilion River runs within Greater Sudbury and Sudbury District. The river has its source in a small lake north of the Thor Lake. It flows in the upper reaches in a south-southeast direction through the Thor Lake and other lakes or river widenings. A line of the Canadian National Railway runs along the river. The Vermilion River turns south, flows through the city Capreol near the western lakeshore of Lake Wanapitei and then makes a sharp turn towards the West. It runs north from Chelmsford, takes on the Onaping River from the right and then it goes through the Lake Vermilion Lake. The Vermilion River now flows south to Whitefish and further west. It flows through the Wabagishik Lake and ends shortly thereafter east of Espanola, the Spanish River.

At the Lorne Falls Dam, above the Wabagishik Lake, there is a hydroelectric power plant.
